About the River
The Niagara
River has been cutting it's way across the shelf of rock
known as the Niagara Escarpment between Lake Ontario and
Lake Erie for about 20,000 years. The Niagara River is about
35 miles (56 Kilometers) long and is the natural outlet from
Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It is one of the worlds greatest
sources of electricity in the Niagara Region. The elevation
between the two lakes is about 326 feet (99 meters), with
the half-way point occurring at the Falls. The total area
drained by the Niagara River is approximately 264,000 square
miles (684,000 square kilometers). Volume of flow of water
is 1760 cubic miles per second during April to September 15
(8:00 AM to 10:00 PM) and September 16 through October 31
(8:00 AM to 8:00 PM). At all other dates and times, the flow
of water is 880 cubic miles per second. The remaining water
flow is removed upstream for production of hydro-electricity
by the U.S. and Canada.

The American Falls
At 180 feet high, the American Falls is higher than the
Canadian Horseshoe Falls. It is 1075 feet wide (328 meters).
The American Falls looks spectacular at night, when it is
lit with various combinations of colored lights. See
lighting schedule later in this attractions list. Over the
last century, The American Falls has undergone a dramatic
face lift due to natural forces of erosion. Geologists
predict that eventually the American Falls will transform
into a succession of descending rapids. The diversion of
water above the falls have slowed the forces of erosion.
About 75,000 gallons of water flow over the American Falls
each second, amounting to only 10% of Niagara's total water
flow.
The Canadian Horseshoe Falls
The Canadian Falls is approximately 170 feet (52 meters)
high. They are estimated to be 2200 feet (675 meters) wide.
The depth of the river at the base of the falls is actually
higher than the falls itself. The river's depth is estimated
at 184 feet (56 meters). The flow of water over these falls
is estimated at more than 42 cubic miles per second. The
Canadian Falls was first described as "horseshoe"
shaped in 1721.
You can go right up to the Falls on the Maid of the Mist, or
you can go behind the Falls on the Journey Behind The Falls.
For additional fun, try the Cave of the Winds, which will
take you on foot right up to the American Falls. All are terrific experiences!
